About This Game It's an oldschool/boomercore game not by just looks and engine, but by gameplay. That means:➣ Sprawling levels that offer a degree of freedom and don't hold the player's hand. Exploring, hunting secrets, backtracking, patience and having to figure out what to do next is key. Monsters and pickups are hand-placed and vary according to the difficulty you play on.➣ Original story packed with lots of lore and doubled by a permeating atmosphere. Intensive attention to detail and world building.➣ Gory, fast paced shooting, a solid arsenal of weapons and magic items. Combat is projectile-based, movement is essential, enemies are unique and vary in type and abilities.➣ Original soundtrack ranging from tense to serene ambient, spiced up with bursts of metal. Also, did I mention the legendary Alexander Brandon? If you enjoyed the Unreal and Deus Ex soundtracks, you're in for a treat!➣ Thousands of hours of work put into an original concept, digitally hand-drawn graphics (textures, sprites, frame by frame animations etc.), scripting, sound effects and level design, all by a one man dev team aiming to create a unique game with a unique atmosphere.➣ Six to eight hours of good 'ol singleplayer action with five difficulties including Brutalizing, which changes the gameplay to allow interesting second playthroughs (different fights & pick-ups, companions etc.).➣ It's very light on storage (under 300mb) and well optimized. You will be dropped in a hostile world that has its own workings, characters and intrigues, and you will be expected to fend for yourself. The build up is slow and steady, the story is consistent, the combat is fast paced and ruthless. You will sometimes find yourself lost in a non linear level design with various aesthetics (forest, caves, forge, barracks, snowy mountain etc.) where exploration and learning by yourself is the key to improve.You may find that Hedon takes a certain amount of atmosphere, gameplay, color and inspiration from games such as Unreal, Blood, Thief, Arx Fatalis, Serious Sam etc. but nonetheless aims to be original at all times.You play as Zan (any similarity with the creator's username is a pure coincidence), a half Orc - half Demon warrior who wakes up in a caved in tunnel with no memory of how she ended up there. The first episode will focus on our hero's descent into a strange underground world which is threatened by the sudden attack of a massive Cultist force.There are certain races and factions populating the world of Hedon.The Iron DivisionA faction of amazon-like Orcs and Goblins, the Iron Division are the keepers Hedon's greatest secret - the crystal technology. Various magical crystals sprawl across the underground, providing energy, heat, oxygen and often forming entire biomes around them. Combining this power with crafting and the ancient art of magic, the Iron Division has founded a whole new civilization within their mountain stronghold known as Valc.The CultistsFallen to sin, the raving husks of what were once human now worship various figures of the Underworld. This is not just a simple DooM Mod/Wad file, they made a whole new game with the old engine. It has its own unique feel, sound and look about it. You can tell they made this with much care and excitement. As an old school gamer (I guess being almost 30 is old school now right?) there are a great number of things in Hedon that really brings me back to the good ol' days. There are secrets Everywhere, there is no hand holding but just enough info to get you going and the map design is fresh and keeps me wanting to see whats around the next corner.That's a big deal to me. I've seen some people complaining about getting lost on the 1st level... That's part of the fun. Games used to be a maze not just a straight line. Do you really want to be the kind of person that runs away and is proud to say you couldn't figure out level one (after less than 10 minutes) or do you can to bunker down, press Tab and explore for a bit? Do yourself a favor and get lost in the world the Dev took the time to make you. It's really awesome to see someone care about how our gaming ancestors did things! And boy did they do a great job! I would love to see them do some kind of big open Morrowind style RPG (because we know Bethesda can not and will not make a game like that again). This Dev has the creative mind to do that, or at least help make some Kick A** dungeons in one. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up. But do not go into expecting a DooM style game, the only thing in common is the engine. Go into it more with the mind set of finding an old game you never heard about at a thrift store for 50 cents and giving it a shot. It'll blow you away.. I am pretty green when it comes to old style shooters like this. But it feels like I am lost so often. Like, SO often. combat feels good, but more like a bullet hell (ending bath house fight) at times as opposed to DOOM fighting.. Quite good! Definitely checks all the boxes it puts forward - open levels, strong attention to detail inside them, an impressive spread of environments, varied enemies and weapons, and a pretty hefty campaign that goes by quickly thanks to good level pacing and a powerful arsenal. Also, A++ shotgun. Very satisfying.. Great game using the GZDoom engine! When I saw the writeup on the store page citing the influences on the developer of this game I knew I had to give it a shot. The game's levels are influenced by classics like Hexen, Arx Fatalis and Thief. Yes... this is a very good thing. The music, while licensed, is fantastic with works from folks like Alexander Brandon (Deus Ex and Unreal... yeah THAT guy!). There are 10 levels in the game, average completion time can last between 30 minutes to an hour. I got between 9 and 10 hours for my first playthrough.While it may be using Doom's engine, don't expect it to play like Doom. The action certainly heats up at times, but it's more about exploration and figuring out how to get through the level. This is where the Hexen and Arx Fatalis design comes in. You will likely get lost. You need to pay attention to notes left around the game to figure out what to do. I like it, but it's something to be aware of if you were expecting Heretic or Doom.Cons?-Sometimes pickups blend in with other junk cluttering the ground. Usually quest items 'flash' so missing a few ammo\/health pickups isn't a huge deal.-The game ends without closure. This is like the first episode of Doom... though much longer.-I had to look up a solution once... and I don't feel guilty over it. I believe it was level 5. I was in a tree house (BIG tree house) and it had a library. The librarian had hidden the key and the solution was a bit too cleverly hidden imho.-Using the GZDoom engine means a lot of the options in the game have absolutely nothing to do with this game. There are, for example, options that effect the game Strife (also a Doom engine game, highly recommend the Nightdive enhanced version) in the options menu.That's about it. I had an honest blast with this game and I eagerly await upcoming projects from the dev if they have as much thought and love put into them as were put into Hedon!. So far I'm really enjoying this game. 2 hours in and I've just manged to get to the "Barracks" level. The Dev isn't kidding around when he says "...patience and having to figure out what to do next is key."The inspirations (Unreal, Blood, Arx Fatalis, Hexen) are fairly apt when having to describe this game, with the exception of Thief and Serious Sam. I don't see Thief\/Serious Sam here, in terms of gameplay or monster\/level design.I see Unreal in terms of world building - A strange alien world who's inhabitants technology is fused with the old medieval architectural designed with steampunk-eque technology. There are a wide range of consumables but no RPG-inventory menu, so get used to memorising the items icon's, order and cycling through them with the "[" and "]" keys.With a pinch of Hexen, rather than outright sci-fi, it's more mysticism and sorcery. With Demons invading an almost DnD-like high fantasy setting. I really like the setting. I do like the traditional Orcs, Elves, Ghouls and Goblins common in high fantasy games, but it's nice to see a nice, fresh twist on these archetypal races. Better that you play the game and see for yourself, my meager attempt to explain won't do Hedon justice.And for 5 quid. This has to be the easiest game to recommend, if you value a slower paced FPS. We *rarely* get anything this unique and refreshing in all of entertainment post 2010.My thoughts might change as I complete Hedon. But as of right now, I'm eager to play more.. pretty good doom/quake like game, runs on GZ Doom. play on the hardest difficulty if you are too ADHD to play 10 minutes before killing things.. If you have already played and beaten the freeware version then you should probably play on Brutalizing just for a new experience, i'm not joking you can die instantly in the first room, its fun, go try it, if you dare.
